How are campaign opens and clicks tracked?

Email "open" tracking is enabled by default when you send a campaign.

When you send a tracked HTML email message, Pinpointe adds a small, transparent tracking image (web beacon) within the content of the HTML message. When the recipient opens the message, the tracking image is referenced from the Pinpointe server. Our server can then determine that the email has been opened, and your tracking statistics are updated.

If the recipient has images blocked by default, then the image will not be initially fetched, and we will not be able to track that the email has been opened. If the recipient selects "download images" or "display images", then the image will be fetched, and the 'email open event' will be tracked.

Note on Text-only Emails: Open statistics cannot be directly tracked for text-only (non-HTML) emails. However, if a link in the email is clicked, then the text-only email can be assumed to have been opened.

Link Click Tracking

When your email is sent from Pinpointe, the links within your email are first added to an internal database in Pinpointe. The links in your email are replaced with a link that references the link that has been added to the database.

When a recipient clicks on a link, they are first directed to our database, which that registers the click event; the recipient is then immediately and transparently re-directed to your specified destination link. Link "click events" can be tracked for both HTML and text-only campaigns. Link tracking is enabled by default and can be disabled at the time you send campaigns.

How do I export email campaign statistics?

You can export detailed email campaign statistics for a single email campaign to a CSV file.

When doing so, you have the following export options:

  • All stats (Statistics Snapshot) - Includes all of the following in one file
  • Open Statistics Only
  • Link Statistics Only
  • Social Link Statistics Only
  • Bounce Statistics Only
  • Unsubscribe Statistics Only
  • Forwarding Statistics Only

To export detailed stats for a single campaign, go to Statistics > Email Campaign Statistics (Fig 1).

To export All statistics for this email campaign, click on the orange icon labeled 'Export Campaign Details' (Fig 4):

To export any of the other statistics by themselves (open stats, unsubscribe stats), click on the tab for the associated stats you want, then click on the orange button to export those specific statistics.

What's the difference between Opens and Unique Opens?

When viewing email statistics under the Statistics tab, you will see both Opens and Unique opens (Fig 5).  This also applies to 'Clicks" and "Unique Clicks"

  • Opens is the number of times your email campaign has been recorded opened. An email can be opened multiple times, and it will be recorded multiple times.

  • Unique Opens is the number of unique recipients who opened the email.

What do the Complaint statistics represent?

From time to time, you may see a red number show up in the Complaints column on the Email Campaign Statistics screen or when you drill further down into the statistics of a particular campaign (Fig 6).

Complaints are generated when an email recipient marks the email as spam in some form or fashion, which results in our servers receiving a code from the recipient's ESP that signals our server to mark the message as a Complaint.

Notes:

  • Some providers (Gmail, Hotmail), do not currently provide a feedback loop to our servers for Complaints; thus, complaints by recipients using these ESPs will not show up in our Complaints Statistics.
  • We do not provide the details, such as email address, of the people who complained due to Regulatory Guidelines.
